Chrome OS vs Chromium OS

I have always gotten the impression that Hexxeh was some how affiliated with Google.  After having a chance to spend some quality time on the Cr-48, I thought for sure he had inside help.  On his blog he clarifies it a bit.  He thanks Google for being supportive of his project in general.  Hmm.

Last week he announced LIME, FLOW'S successor.  We can expect it in a week or so.  It will have all of the bells and whistles of VANILLA, with more hardware support.  That's good news for anyone interested in trying Chromium OS, which is open source.   The Hexxeh builds are based on Chromium OS.  Jolicloud apps run in custom Chromium windows.  Chromium is also open source.

Chrome OS is developed by Google for the OEM channel.  So, if you want the real thing, you are going to have to buy a Google powered device.   The most obvious difference between Chrome OS and a  Chromium OS build is availability.  Google's Chrome OS is only available on the Cr-48.  It could be months before the first Chrome OS device comes to market.  You can head over to Hexxeh's Chromium OS page and download a live usb build right now.

That's exactly what I did.  I am using the most recent build of Vanilla, which was released today.  As I alluded to at the beginning of my post, there is very little difference in the user experience.  Aside from the order of items in the settings menu and the absence of a shutdown button on the Vanilla login screen, they look very much alike.   Actually, as far as the user interface goes, using Chrome as your browser just about nails it.

So, why would I suggest you try a Chromium OS instead of just using Chrome?  That's simple, speed and simplicity.  It boots straight into a browser.  How's that for simple?  Unlike a Chrome browser running on Windows or Linux,  there is no sharing of resources.  Running from a usb memory stick, Vanilla boots to the login screen in about 30 seconds, the first 10 seconds were part of the computer start-up.  The Cr-48 accomplishes this in about 15 seconds.  In less than one minute you could be browsing the web.  That works for me.
